Jasmine Myra is Leeds’ breakout star in the UK jazz scene.
Like her Gondwana Records-signed peers, Jasmine’s music is immersive and emotional, often labelled as ‘cinematic’, whilst wearing her eclectic influences – from MF DOOM to Bonobo – on its sleeve.
This year, Jasmine released her second album ‘Rising’ to huge acclaim. Not only did it continue the momentum of her 2022 debut, but it strengthened her hold in a space she’s carved for herself in the country’s jazz landscape.
We chatted to Jasmine about how it’s been writing, releasing and touring the album. We also discussed how her experience as a Leeds native and Conservatoire graduate has shaped Jasmine’s career, differences between the Leeds jazz scene and that of her current home in the capital, as well the London-centrism of ‘UK jazz’.
Jasmine’s is an inspiring success story for musicians, especially from Leeds – she offers her advice for those on a similar artistic journey, an essential listen for anyone in the Leeds circuit.
