Matt Forde: It’s My Political Party (and I’ll Cry if I Want To) @ City Varieties
Matt Forde is funny, likeable and insightful. Despite transport issues delaying his start time, Forde jumped straight on stage and into entertainment mode. He interacts brilliantly with the audience and appears to be a genuine, lovely person. His stage persona is very “real” and I don’t feel as though he’s putting on a show – it feels more like a casual chat with friends and I like this style a lot. Somehow Forde manages to make politics accessible and casual without being patronising.
Of course, Brexit and Trump’s recent election were the two main hot topics, showing how much Forde must have to re-write his scripts and improvise. His impressions of major politicians are spot on and he has the audience in fits of laughter at his observations. I wasn’t expecting impressions, so this was the icing on the cake.
He shares his own personal views freely, which is an honest and brave approach, but he also puts the other side’s point of view across. This level view of politics allows the show to run smoothly without tension and makes it enjoyable for everyone regardless of their own views.
Even with a mild interest in politics, Forde’s show would be an enjoyable evening’s entertainment. Check out his upcoming tour dates!
