MonologueSlam UK comes to West Yorkshire Playhouse
January 31, 2016
MonologueSlam UK is a well known national competitive showcase for actors. Produced by TriForce Creative Network and West Yorkshire Playhouse and supported by Spotlight and Equity, the shows celebrate talent from all over the country.
TSOTA was lucky enough to chat to actor Alan Booth, who’ll be performing in MonologueSlam UK this February.
The industry showcase offers actors from across the country the chance to demonstrate their skills. Alan is particularly pleased to be back ‘Up North’ after three years training at Birmingham School of Acting. “I auditioned in early 2016, and was thrilled when I was offered a chance to perform in the 1 minute monologue round. I’ve been practicing the piece non-stop, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
He’ll be performing a monologue from A Chorus of Disapproval by Alan Ayckbourn. “I’m a big fan of Ayckbourn’s writing and I hope this monologue will entertain the audience so they can fall in love with his characters too.”
Monologue Slam UK is a great platform for regional actors to represent their local area. Alan says: “I’m a Yorkshire lad, so to have the opportunity to perform at my dream theatre, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, is surreal. I want to show the audience just what us Northerners can do!”
Alan’s certainly an up-and-coming talent, having already performed in Peter Pan with the Tread The Boards Theatre Company and several shows during his time at the Birmingham School of Acting. “I’m excited to see what the future holds. It would be great to continue acting in Yorkshire, though as an actor opportunities present themselves all over the place! It’s a great industry to be in and, having just graduated last year, I’m looking forward to new opportunities in 2016.”
Is Alan nervous about the competitive element? “Each winner from the regional shows competes at a national final later in the year. Though it’s a competition, I’m most excited about being given the opportunity to perform alongside other talented actors in front of some of the country’s best and most influential industry professionals.”
It’s certainly set to be a star-studded event. Chizzy Akudolu (perhaps better known as Mo Effanga on Holby City) will be hosting the event and confirmed judges include West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Associate Director Mark Rosenblatt, Casting Director Kay Magson CDG, Broad Acting Management Katy Edwards, and Theatre and Television writer Ben Tagoe.
There’ll also be a DJ, a musician and an improv. round to keep the audience entertained all evening whilst the judges decide the winner. What a great way to celebrate the skills of talented actors and performers!
MonologueSlam UK is coming to Leeds on Saturday 13th February at 8pm. It’s already selling out fast, so make sure to book your tickets from the West Yorkshire Playhouse website soon.
