There seem to be more festivals than ever exploring and experimenting with collaboration: commissioning projects and artists that utilise and combine different artforms. This exciting approach to the Arts has allowed us to discover some truly unique projects and events in Yorkshire alone this year and we can safely say that RECON is set to open our eyes to more. The festival certainly seems to promise some weird and wonderful installations, compositions, screenings, performances and exhibitions in this year’s programme….
RECON Festival is one of experimental art, film and music, exploring the relationship between them. This year’s festival takes place from 18th – 29th September at multiple venues across Leeds and Bradford and will include some ambitious, innovative and newly commissioned artworks that foster collaboration between artists and musicians.
2014 venues are set to include Howard Assembly Room, Brudenell Social Club, Delius Arts and Cultural Centre, Wharf Chambers Co-operative Club, Hyde Park Picture House, The 1 in 12 Club, Victoria Gardens, Gallery II (University of Bradford), Fuse Art Space, Leeds West Indian Centre and The Tetley.
If the image above catches your attention, check your diary for TONIGHT (18th). Free event Frozen Music will be kicking off the festival – a work by internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, Chris Sharkey and Christophe De Bezenac together with Amorphous Orchestra. Frozen Music is a live music and projection event that uses the real-time scanning of performers brains to melt and morph the architecture of Leeds Art Gallery. Yes you read correctly! Victoria Gardens from 8pm.
From 22nd -28th, artists Tom Hopkins and Giulia Ricci will create a new sound and visual work, taking the bold theories of 19th Century theorist Owen Jones as the starting point for an installation and live event. This is a free event held at The Tetley 11am – 6pm.
A collaboration between dance-loving artist Yvonne Carmichael and noise-rockers That Fucking Tank promises to exist at the crossroads of a Silent Disco, underground gig, sound installation and movement-based participative performance. Thursday 25th at the Delius Arts & Cultural Centre, Bradford, 8pm.
Juxtavoices, Sat 20th Sept – Delius Arts & Cultural Centre, Bradford
On Saturday 20th, artist collective Black Dogs will presentthe first broadcast of their new work Guided Goitside – a composition for radio broadcast, exploring Bradford’s countercultural history, present and future – at an event also featuring Bradford Scratch Orchestra and headlined by Sheffield antichoir Juxtavoices. At the Delius Arts & Cultural Centre, Bradford, 7pm.
Other events will feature an exhibition and screening of films by celebrated Indian documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan; a visual and music programme put together by The Illuminated Room at Hyde Park Picture House including works by Kenneth Anger, Pipilotti Rist and Derek Jarman as well as a Cops and Robbers alldayer including a screening of The Bruce Lacey Experience; and a diverse range of live music.
RECON Festival is bursting at the seams new works, and both new and established artists working across the arts, promising a diverse, experimental and captivating programme.
